Kollektiv Kaufhof

Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof GmbH is closing more than half of its Galeria Kaufhof stores across Germany as part of an insolvency process. This resulting vacancy demands thoughtful engagement and presents opportunities for cooperative and sustainable urban development.
In the summer of 2023, the Galeria Kaufhof in Halle (Saale) also shut its doors. The large building in the city center now stands empty, awaiting a new purpose.
As part of the Silbersalz Festival 2023, we addressed the issue of vacancy with an installation designed to encourage the residents of Halle (Saale) to engage in discussions about the building's future use. Through this installation in the former Galeria Kaufhof, we aim to inspire the community to take an active role in shaping sustainable urban development.
